An area along the South Branch of the Chicago River has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The National Park Service added the area near Cermak Road earlier this month. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency announced the addition on Thursday. The agency administers the program in Illinois.
The Cermak Road Bridge Historic District includes industrial buildings around the city's last double-leaf Scherzer rolling lift bridge.
The state agency says the area is unique because it is the city's only warehouse district from the early 20th century that is near a bridge from the same period.
