'Louder Than a Bomb' jumps from stage to screen

'Louder Than a Bomb' documents Chicago’s annual teen poetry slam between teams from more than 60 Chicago-area high schools.

Slam poetry is kind of a love it or hate it thing: Some in the poetry community say it is too raw – not real poetry and some folks just can’t stand slam’s particular cadence and rhythm. But converts can’t sing – or shout – its praises enough!

The Chicago-based poetry competition Louder Than a Bomb has turned many on to the power of the poetry slam. The annual fest provides local teens with a chance to hone their writing and voice chops. More recently, the festival caught the attention of filmmakers Jon Siskel and Greg Jacobs.

The duo decided to make a feature documentary about the event. Greg Jacobs says the students in the film are well aware of the cliches and parodies that shadow slam poetry.

Louder Than a Bomb will make its first Chicago run at the Gene Siskel Film Center from Feb. 4 - 10. Directors Jacobs, Jon Siskel and selected young poets, will be present for audience discussion during select screenings.
