For months now, local DJs have been showcasing their technical and musical skills on Eight Forty-Eight in the DJ Series: A Spinning Season. The equipment they use ranges from turntables to CD players to laptops. But the overwhelming majority of them got their start on turntables. In fact, some DJs say if you didn’t earn your stripes on the turntables, you just don’t have the cred. But is that just the DJ version of "Back in my day..."?

Friday's DJ thinks so. Most days Samuel Vega can be found developing his passion for sound at WBEZ as one of the Pritzker Journalism Fellows. But on nights and weekends he’s known around Chicago as "DJ Bone." Vega provided the beats throughout the hour.
