Here, There: In France, abortion no longer a political issue
August 8, 2011
Today, as part of our occasional Here, There series, we look at the abortion debate in France. At first blush, it would seem as though France has a lot in common with the U.S. when it comes to reproductive issues. Both legalized abortion in the 1970s. Both had influential feminist movements which led the charge to change the law and remove barriers to access.
But the similarities end there. In France, abortion has moved outside the political realm and into accepted medical practice. To help us understand this divergence, we speak to Jean Robinson, a professor of political science and expert on French abortion policy at Indiana University.
