Ali Abunimah thinks Palestinian bid for statehood at UN may do more harm than good

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivered a letter requesting recognition of statehood to the UN General Assembly.

After submitting a letter to the UN last Friday requesting recognition of Palestinian statehood, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas received a rousing welcome in the West Bank yesterday. He told the crowd that they’re part of a “Palestinian Spring” now. But not everyone thinks the bid will have its intended consequences.

Ali Abunimah is co-founder of The Electronic Intifada website. His recent article in Foreign Affairs magazine states that the Palestinian Authority’s bid for statehood, meant to “circumvent the failed peace process,” is really “an ill-conceived gambit that actually amplifies the flaws of the very process it seeks to replace.” He joins us to discuss his views and what’s next for the Palestinians.
