CPD puts author's 'Don't Shoot' strategy to work
By Robert Wildeboer | Nov. 28, 2011
David Kennedy thinks he knows how to stop gun violence in America’s cities, and he says, contrary to public debate and popular opinion, it's not that hard.
Kennedy, a criminologist at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, is being taken very seriously by the Chicago Police Department; they have been implementing his ideas about violence reduction, which appear in his new book, Don’t Shoot.
The CPD began implementing Kennedy’s Violence Reduction Strategy in two police districts; Chicago police officials expected to add a third district in the next few weeks.
WBEZ’s Robert Wildeboer recently caught up with Kennedy at Chicago’s police headquarters during a recent visit with officers and command staff to discuss how to bring down local homicide numbers.
He said the traditional answers to gun violence, such as improved schools, job programs and gun control, have not worked.

This is not new. As a retired officer who worked Englewood, Cabrini, Altgeld Gardens and Wentowrth, a small cadre of Black officers used an approach even more culturally based than Kennedy's. We took it to the administration more than once between 1988-1999 and were ridiculed vehemently with comments such as we are police officers not social workers. Now we have a "white guy", from a "white institution" who has apparently stolen an authentic concept and made it his own. This is no different than the government taking over "policy" and legalizing it calling it "lottery". The truth of the matter is, the system caused the problem now they want to get credit for appearing empathetic towards finding a solution. Same soup warmed over!
All, you have to listen to the interview. I know you what everything boiled down for you , but this time you have to listen and comprehend.
Mark Walsh said he's very interested in this approach? WHAT approach? The article has no substance. It says Kennedy has a new approach and it's pretty easy to implement. Cool. What the heck IS it? Who is using it? How is the success rate measured, or are we just publishing vague generalities, based on the self-interested statements of the author of the 'new approach'?
What I get from this article is that Mr. Kennedy wrote a book and Mr. Kennedy says he has an effective new (undefined) approach to reducing gun violence.
Huh?
Begging gangbangers to stop killing and selling drugs in public only gives the gangs more power over the community. Only on the west and south side are drugs sold in an open market. Most drugs sold in Chicago are sold by a phone call. The only way to stop the violence is if the communities that have such violence stop blaming the police, society and white people. Avoiding the race issue only hurts the black community. I'm sick of seeing a black man in his 60s dressing like a teenage thug. It seems clothing and social "coolness" is more important than raising children right.
A better title would be "Don't Act Black" If they could do that the crime rate would go down.
The rest is just a pipe dream.
You state "The CPD began implementing Kennedy’s Violence Reduction Strategy in two police districts; Chicago police officials expected to add a third district.." More information is appreciated.
1) In what districts has this Don't Shoot strategy been implemented?
2) When was it started?
3) When will the results be reviewed for initial evaluation?
Very interesting story I was glad to hear about this approach!!!
Thank you Mr. Wildeboer for reporting this. I am happy to hear it.
