Runners start the 2011 Chicago Marathon.

In 2011, it took 31 days to fill the 45,000 available slots for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. This year, it took only six, a record breaker.

Over his decades-long career, Bill Leach has coached inter-collegiate track and field, cross country, running and performance enhancement. He has served as the head coach of track and field and cross country at four universities.

Coach Leach joined Eight Forty-Eight to talk about Chicago's emergence as a city of joggers and the human capacity to run.
