In 1992, writer Irene Zabytko wrote a novel, The Sky Unwashed, about a group of elderly people who returned to the contaminated area around the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. For her next project she decided to go to Chernobyl and film a documentary about life in the Exclusion Zone.
