The Philippines was colonized first by Spain in the 1500s. It was then handed over to the United States after the Spanish-American War. The Southeast Asian nation finally gained independence after World War II It's in this context that a unique form of Filipino pop music sprang up in the mid-twentieth century. The music is called Pinoy Rock. We're going to spend our edition of Global Notes with Radio M and mid-day host Tony Sarabia, focusing on Pinoy music and the Chicago pinoy band Bagwis.
