Europe, like the United States, has seen a steady rise in Islamophobia. In the Netherlands, the ruling coalition is backed by an openly anti-Islamic politician, Geert Wilders. Wilders is about to be retried in a Dutch court for inciting hatred by calling Islam “fascist” and likening the Koran to Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
Simon Kuper grew up in the Netherlands and is now a reporter for the Financial Times. In a recent article, he wrote about the rise of Islamophobia in Dutch society.
