You may have noticed that the candy aisles are spilling over with Halloween goodies. But Chicagoans don’t need tricks to get excited about the treats. The city has long been home to some of the world’s finest candy makers, from Wrigley’s to Brach’s. A new exhibition at the University of Chicago’s John Crerar Library explores our city’s deep connection to candy. Beth Kimmerle is a candy historian and curator of Sweet Home Chicago: Chocolate and Confectionery Production and Technology in the Windy City. We talked with Kimmerle earlier this year about how the industry has shaped Chicago. She says Chicago was already becoming a noted candy capital even before the Great Chicago Fire.
