The Off-Air Event Series extends your WBEZ listening experience to nights on the town – come see what you’ve been hearing and celebrate Chicago! Beginning September 2010 and continuing through June 2011, a wholly unique live experience will be yours to enjoy. Each month promises to be different and something not to miss—with discounted tickets for WBEZ members.

Beginning at 11am, come on out for a “Winter Block Party” celebrating Chicago’s hip-hop arts. This year’s event will again feature a visual art and graffiti gallery exhibition by some of Chicago's most notable and up and coming contemporary artists, along with a marketplace, hip-hop barbershop, film screening, live sampling showcase, a one-on-one B-Boy/B-Girl battle hosted by The Legendary Brickheadz, an Open Mic Academy open mic, and music all afternoon by some of Chicago’s favorite DJs including Itch 13, Sweatpants Money, and DJ Susannah Kim (just to name a few!).

This day long celebration has become an annual event!  

Participating Visual Artists include: Aron Hanson, Rodrigo Solo Mireles, Chris Silva, Nick Deter Adam, Ruben Like Agurrie, Revise CMW, Kane One, Ray Cro Noland, Lili Blis, Christophe Roberts, Johnny Sampson, Stephen FlemisterKrista Franklin, Roy Afeks, Peter Kepha, Molly Butterfoss, Jonathan Mills, Carlos Dominguez (Vintage House Flier Collector), Tonika "TONI" Johnson, Jose Estrada, Billy Craven, Lauren Feece, Raul V Diaz (Vintage Hip Hop Flier and Tape Collector), Carlos Dominguez (Vintage House Flier Collector), Kevin Starke, Emily Anne Evans, Dyen NSH (Vintage Spray Can Collector), and the personal boombox collection of legendary contemporary artist, DZINE.  With a marketplace featuring AKIN Chicago, CZR PRZNovem and more!  A complete Catalog of works-for-sale will be available at the door, and select prints will be featured for sale in the WBEZ Store beginning in early January 2011.


The all-day event will culminate with a special evening event exploring the roots of Chicago’s legendary House scene (full details below).  With special guests, live DJs, and art across the generations, this entire event is not-to-miss!

Doors open at 11am to view the 2011 visual art and graffiti gallery exhibition (free).

1pm: FILM SCREENING ($5/$3): “Copyright Criminals” examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, tracing the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures including Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground — while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more. 2pm: Vocalo SAMPLING SHOWCASE (free): Join Jesse Menendez, host of Vocalo’s Music Vox, for a live presentation on the art of sampling. Chicago's most respected producers will talk about the history and circumstances that led to this phenomenon in music. Stefan Ponce will give a live tutorial on how to mash up sounds to make a remix. Guests will have a chance to bump their heads to a live DJ set uncovering instrumental origins to your favorite songs. Be sure to stop by for lively discussion, great music and find out who wins Vocalo's beat making contest!

3pm: DANCE BATTLE ($5/$3): “First Come, First Served!” – it was the most popular event of the Party last year: a one-on-one B-Boy/B-Girl dance battle.  Hosted by Chicago’s very own Legendary Brickheadz, sign up is on-site only and starts at 2pm. Winner gets a $250 cash prize!

5pm: OPEN MIC (free): Hosted by HBO Def Poets Tim Stafford and Shannon Matesky as part of Young Chicago Authors' Open Mic Academy sign up is on-site only and starts at 2pm.

8pm: Original Style: Exploring the History of Chicago House
Join us as part of the live studio audience, to hear firsthand from the founders of Chicago House: Jamie Principle, one of the early pioneers of house music most known for the 1985 single 'Your Love' (with Frankie Knuckles), DJ Frankie Knuckles, known as 'The Honorary Godfather of House Music'; Robert Williams, owner of the Warehouse and Music Box; Frederick Dunson, original warehouse manager; Reggie Corner, House music promoter; Lewis Lazu, dancer and promoter; and many more. Hosted by Kevin Coval, the hour will include archival film, bringing back the scenes and sounds of the 1980s and 90s, and music selections courtesy of SilverRoom founder, DJ Eric Williams. Doors open at 7pm, a Reception will follow.  Limited Seating; broadcast scheduled for June 2011.

Following this event, you're invited to an After Party with legendary house DJ Ron Trent and seminal Hip-Hop DJ Jesse De La Pena to experience it all for yourself!  Whether or not you've hung-out with us through the day, come on over/back/stick-around at 10pm to close it all out in style...

From start to finish, The Winter Block Party for Chicago's Hip-Hop Arts is being hosted this year at the Chicago Urban Art Society’s brand-new exhibition space; CUAS is an amazing organization which was created by the brother-sister team of Peter Kepha and Lauren M. Pacheco to promote the art makers visual voice.  Their entire space will be transformed for the Party, with the visual exhibition – curated by Creative Director Peter Kepha and Winter Block Party artistic director Kevin Coval – remaining on display through Saturday, February 26, 2011.
