Children in Chicago might soon find tanning salons off limits.

On Wednesday, a city council committee unanimously voted to ban minors from using tanning beds in salons in Chicago — a vote that sends the ordinance to the full council for a vote on June 6.

The committee voted after hearing from skin cancer experts as well as skin cancer survivors.

Tanning beds have received a lot of attention in recent weeks after a deeply tanned New Jersey woman was accused of allowing her 5-year-old daughter to use a tanning bed. She was charged with child endangerment and has pleaded not guilty.

Alderman Debra Silverstein says about 360 people die of melanoma, a form of skin cancer, in Illinois every year, and that her ordinance will save lives.
