The new Democratic candidate for the southern Illinois congressional seat held by retiring Congressman Jerry Costello says he "demands" his Republican opponent debate him soon.

Former Illinois National Guard chief Bill Enyart tells the Belleville News-Democrat he'd be willing in principle to consider Jason Plummer's call for holding a debate in each of the 12th Congressional District's dozen counties.

Enyart is a Belleville attorney who was selected last weekend by those counties' Democratic heads to take the place on the November ballot of Brad Harriman, who withdrew from the race for medical reasons.

A Plummer spokesman re-affirms the Republicans commitment to the 12-debate format and says Plummer looks forward to discussing the issues civilly.

Only two people, both Democrats, have represented the 12th District since World War II.
