CICERO — The state of Illinois will spend $45 million on early childhood education in underserved areas.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced the funding on Wednesday in the Chicago suburb of Cicero at a pre-kindergarten program. The money will be divided into 14 Early Childhood Construction Grants and paid for through the governor's Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program.

The grant money can be used to buy or construction a facility or expand an existing facility. Grant recipients also can use the money to buy equipment and make safety improvements.

Early childhood providers in Cook, Kane, Kankakee, McHenry, St. Clair, Will and Winnebago counties will receive grants.
