WAUKEGAN, Ill. — Sandbagging is under way in earnest in Lake County north Chicago, where residents living near the Des Plaines and Fox rivers prepare for possible flooding in coming days.

Volunteers filled, stacked and delivered sandbags in Fox Lake, Gurnee and several other Lake County towns. Communities in McHenry and Kane counties also put their flood plans in place.

Kurt Woolford of the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission says if the rain in coming days is as heavy as they were Wednesday, then flooding in the area will be serious.

The National Weather Service expected a storm system moving over Illinois would dump about three inches of rain in the area. However, Woolford said it may reach five inches by the time the storm clears the state late Thursday.
