Springfield police officers will soon be patrolling on Segways again.
The department recently purchased four new batteries for the two Segways it bought in 2007. The State Journal-Register reports the old batteries ran out two or three years ago. Springfield Police Chief Robert Williams says the Segways should hit the streets over the next few weeks.
Deputy Police Chief Bob Markovic says officers will primarily use the Segways to patrol downtown Springfield during the day. Markovic says the Segways will let officers respond to calls more quickly and make them more approachable to people visiting downtown.
Springfield police used to have a horse patrol, but it was discontinued in 2003 for financial reasons.
