Cambodia’s Kmher Rouge on Trial

In 2007, the Extraordinary Chambers in the courts of Cambodia were created to try the leaders of the Khmer Rouge responsible for the death of 1.7 million Cambodians. An agreement between the UN and Cambodia established the tribunals as a Cambodian court with both Cambodian and International judges.

Last week, the four top leaders of the Khmer Rouge were indicted and charged with Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity, and series of Cambodian criminal code violations.

David Scheffer co-edits the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor, which closely follows the tribunal. Scheffer is Director of the Center for International Human Rights at Northwestern Law School.

His upcoming book, All the Missing Souls, details the tribunal building efforts in the 90's when he was U.S. Ambassador at Large for War Crimes Issues.
