Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize 2007
The Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize will be awarded to Peter Constantine in 2007 for his translation of Benjamin Lebert's The Bird is a Raven (Der Vogel ist ein Rabe), which was published this past year by the Alfred A. Knopf. The prize will be financed by the German Federal Government and presented in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Chicago. The recipient will be awarded $10,000 and a stay at the Literary Colloquium in Berlin.
Peter Constantine translates from German, Italian, Russian, French, contemporary Greek and Slovenian, and has received many awards and distinctions for this work.
The prize is named after Helen and Kurt Wolff - a married couple who emigrated to New York in 1941 and made it their mission to support European literature.
