Pistacchio Amaro from Palermo Bakery
I like a good pistachio like the next guy, but I had never had anything like the pistacchio amaro when I went to the Palermo Bakery on the far Western edge of the city a few months ago. My friend Mario Rizzotti had told me about this place. They specialize in the food of Sicily, and so like their homemade focaccia lightly topped with crushed tomatoes and anchovies, their sweets are also otherworldly. At first glance, the cookie doesn't look all that unique: there are some pistachios embedded around a soft-seeming cookie, all dusted in powdered sugar. But take a bite, and then you instantly realize that this treasure also contains almond paste, and for some reason, the combination of those two elements - almonds and pistachios - in a soft texture, makes for a truly memorable treat. This is absolutely something you should eat. By the way, they also have another location in Franklin Park.
