Dave Rempis studied anthropology and ethnomusicology at Northwestern University in the '90s. And since then he’s been putting those academic chops to good musical use. Rempis is involved with multiple groups around the city – like The Vandermark Five and The Engines. And he heads The Rempis Percussion Quartet.
The improvisational percussion quartet takes its inspiration from different genres of music – West African, Latin American, American Funk, and Free Jazz. The idea is to create spontaneous music that still has some structure to it. The Rempis Percussion Quartet first formed for a house party back in 2004. But they’ve stuck around, putting out multiple CDs.
On Wednesday, members Dave Rempis, Ingebright Haker Flaten, Frank Rosaly and Tim Daisy will perform a record release show for Montreal Parade at The Hideout in Chicago.
