Artist Susana Baca singlehandedly put Afro-Peruvian music on the map in the mid-1990s. David Byrne gave Baca her first glimpse of international recognition, when he featured her interpretation of "Maria Lando" on the Soul of Black Peru, a compilation on the Luaka Bop label. In 2002, Baca won a Latin Grammy award for the album Lamento Negro.
She's now Peru’s minister of culture and the first black minister since independence from Spain. WBEZ contributor and Latino Beat host Catalina Maria Johnson, filling in for Tony Sarabia, tells us more about Baca and shares some of her top Afro-Peruvian tunes. (Susana Baca performed on Worldview back in 2005.)
Baca will play two shows at the Mayne Stage in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood on Saturday, August 27.
