The national oral history project StoryCorps plans to honor each person killed on 9/11 with a recording by a friend or family member that will be part of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.
StoryCorps, which is heard weekly on public radio, said Thursday that it has already memorialized nearly 600 victims over the past five years. StoryCorps also is collecting stories of rescuers and survivors.
StoryCorps founder Dave Isay says the first 10 interviews are featured on a free mobile app that serves as a guide to the new 9/11 Memorial in New York. Visitors can use an iPhone, Android or Windows app to search for victims' names at the memorial and learn about their lives.
StoryCorps also produced a 9/11 special airing next week on NPR.
