Sally Ride: The first female astronaut in space died this week at the age of 61 from pancreatic cancer.  As WBEZ blogger Achy Obejas points out, what many didn’t know until her death was that Ride also was as gay. How did the significance of her career make her an example for a generation of American youth?

Amelia Earhart: Earlier this week, an effort to locate the wreckage of her plane came up empty.  On this the 115th anniversary of her birth, why is she still a figure that captures the public imagination?

The Onion: Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon plans to declare July 31 "The Onion Day" in Illinois to honor the satirical newspaper's decision to move its media operations from New York toChicago.
