The district is expected to release a pared down list of schools still eligible for closure by Feb. 13. But the issue of closing schools is more than just moving students to another school. One issue is what the district plans to do with the vacant buildings after the school is shut down. School leaders say they will not put new schools in those buildings or hand them over to charter school like they have in the past. WBEZ’s Becky Vevea is heading out to another city—Philadelphia--that’s shuttered it’s schools to see what’s happened to those empty buildings.Data/Abandoned BuildingsA fire at an abandoned building in the Bridgeport neighborhood got us wondering how many vacant buildings are across the city, and why they’re left unoccupied. David Courier, senior programmer for Sundance Film Festival, talks about the fest, some controversy surrounding the annual event, its USA initiative and more.Music Thursday: Girl GroupsFifty-two years ago this week, the girl group The Shirelles hit number on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the song “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” , becoming the first all-female group to reach that milestone. What started as a novelty act during the vaudeville days, the Girl Group has become an important and integral part of the pop music landscape around the world. Tony Sarabia and Richard Steele celebrate the contributions of the Girl Group with the help of Kristin Mark, lead guitarist with the Chicago band Summer Girlfriends.
