Chicago native Rick Wojick used to turn on people to music during his days in college radio. Now he helps people have fun with all kinds of sounds through Dusty Groove America, his Wicker Park record store.

Tonight on Radio M, Chicago Reader music writer Peter Margasak is in for his usual monthly take on new releases crossing his desk. This month, Peter highlights the new one from Brazilian DJ Dolores, as well as a release from a beautifully husky voiced rai singer.

Tonight on Radio M, the Mediterranean sounds of Compass Rose Quintet. The Oak Park-based band was started by two guys who cut their chops in rock and roll. The music they play now incorporates just about everything except straight up classical.

Prince Jimmy Tokoh is a Nigerian musician with a hometown band called the Chicago Highlife Funkies. Tokoh was born in San Francisco but moved to Nigeria when he was three. He began singing at an early age in church and soon mastered the conga.

Congolese trance band Konono No.1 is one of the Grammy nominees for Best Traditional World Music Album: Live at Couleur Cafe. Tonight on Radio M, our own live version of the band, recorded at Chicago's Empty Bottle for the series, From the Stage. 

Chicago Reader music writer Peter Margasak is back for the new year's first New Sounds and without fail, there's a pick from Brazil, Peter's favorite place for music. He also has the latest release from Chicago's Arabesque Music Ensemble and some fado from Portugal.

For more than three decades Ryuichi Sakamoto has been making music that has run the gamut from techo-pop and jazz to bossa nova and film scores. Tony Sarabia welcomes Sakamoto tonight to talk about his career and his latest effort, Ocean Fire. It'll be a night of Sakamoto music.
