You heard it here first: We like sports

May 16, 2008

It might surprise you that our public radio offices are full of chatter that has nothing to do with the "important news stories" of the day. Although we don't flaunt it on air, local sports is often a hot topic. Next to politics, baseball, football and basketball are Chicago's favorite spectator sports. Sorry, hockey fans. One recent sports nugget that caught my attention was the discovery of nude blowup dolls in the White Sox clubhouse. I brought it up in a recent "brainstorming" meeting for Right Now, our new call-in series. I told my colleagues, both women, that all the controversy about the blowup dolls was, well, nothing more than hot air. They begged to differ. We figured if we were arguing about our athletes' bad manners, listeners must be, too. So we decided to table our serious topic ideas (for now) and do a show about sportsmanship -- or the lack thereof. I don't know about you, but I think it's time we hear a rowdy conversation about sports on our airwaves. The fun begins on Wednesday at 2 pm. We're taking your calls so come prepared with examples of sports figures behaving badly. Find out more about how to participate.
