
Meckeal Mallet is fully absorbed in his laptop, one of the dozens rolled into Donaghue Elementary's third grade classroom. Behind Meckeal is a screen where a visiting technology coordinator demonstrates how to operate Microsoft Word, step by step. Students are instructed to put their hands on their heads if the teacher is talking and they have a temptation to type. Some worry that technology has the potential to make young children too easily distracted, while others say that computers engage children like few other pedagogical tools.
