A Chicago police officer is recovering after he accidentally shot himself in the leg while pursuing three suspects.

Authorities say the officer was wounded after chasing a vehicle for several miles early Monday.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden says the chase began when the vehicle sped away from a traffic stop. Camden says the car eventually hit a chain-link fence and lurched back toward the approaching officer.

Camden says that's when the officer accidentally shot himself in the calf while trying to get out of the way.

The three men in the car were taken into custody.
