Tammy Duckworth has resigned her position as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Duckworth was sworn in by Secretery of Veterans Affairs, Eric Shinseki in April 2009. In a statement, Shinseki says Duckworth served with distinction.

"Her commitment to serving Veterans and increasing VA's outreach has helped the department serve more Veterans and serve them well," Shinseki said.

The Hoffman Estates veteran was a helicopter pilot in Iraq when she lost both her legs in a grenade attack in 2004. Before her time with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, she served as the chief of the Illinois VA. Duckworth ran for Congress in 2006, but lost to Illinois Republican Peter Roskam.

There was no immediate information available as to why Duckworth is resigning, but another run for the U.S. House is still an option for her.
