Thousands of Chicago elementary students could soon spend more time at school each day.

The Chicago Board of Education is considering the pilot program for 15 low performing schools.

Students could spend an extra 90 minutes in front of computers, using special reading and math software.

And students in the mandatory program might not be supervised by certified teachers.

District spokesperson Monique Bond says community groups like the YMCA will manage the program.

The federal government has been pushing districts to extend school hours. Chicago has one of the shortest school days in the country.
