Half as Many Chicago Shootings as Previous Weekend

April 28, 2008

Gun violence over the weekend is down in Chicago compared to an alarming spike a week ago. Between Friday and yesterday, Chicago police reported fifteen people were shot. That's down from thirty-six shootings last weekend. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he's glad to see the decline, but he predicts gun violence will continue.

DALEY: America loves guns. Guns destroy families and people all throughout America. That's what the issue is. Gun manufacturers basically own this country, lock, stock and barrel. They do, so that's your problem.

Chicago has a ban on hand guns. The gun industry has argued such bans deny individuals the right to bear arms. The U.S. Supreme Court could decide the fate of a similar hand-gun ban in Washington D.C. later this year.
