CTA: About One Bus Collision a Day in 2009

August 16, 2010

The Chicago Transit Authority says it had an average of about one bus collision per day in 2009.

Last year, there were more than 270 reportable bus collisions in Chicago according to the Federal Transit Administration. But the CTA says 67 percent of those cases involved another vehicle hitting a bus.

Sheila Gregory is an agency spokeswoman. She says safety audits and re-certifying drivers every two years are some of the efforts put forth by the CTA to reduce collisions.

GREGORY: We want to make it as safe as possible. We're doing everything we can to work with the operators. And even in cases where they get hit by somebody else to make them better defensive drivers.

Gregory says improvements in 2009 helped bring collision numbers down from 2008. There are currently 141 bus routes under CTA control.
