This sign along the 96 Lunt route warns riders about possible service cuts.
The Regional Transportation Authority today will decide whether to accept a temporary bailout of the Chicago Transit Authority. If nothing's done, 39 CTA bus routes could be eliminated Sunday. Chicago Public Radio's Shawn Allee reports how some bus routes got on that list.

CTA-rider Marsha Lev lives in Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood. At times, she takes the 96 Lunt bus. Recently, she heard the route might get cut.

LEV: Well, it's really convenient when you need it, but I do notice that it goes by many times with no passengers, without on this particular one, I think they do have some sort of reason.

In fact, the 96 Lunt route attracts just eleven hundred daily riders, but routes with ten times that number might get the axe, too. A CTA spokesperson says the agency selects routes for possible elimination when riders can use other options, or the route does not feed busy rail stations. The federal government reviews service reductions according to racial and economic parity criteria.
