There are a slew of mayoral and city council seats up for grabs throughout Lake and Porter counties in Indiana.

In the city of Gary, the Democratic primary for mayor is crowded: Nine candidates are vying to replace incumbent Mayor Rudy Clay, who dropped out due to his battle with cancer.

Two of the top candidates are women, so Gary could be on its way to elect its first female mayor. The winner faces the lone Republican candidate in the fall, although Gary hasn’t elected a Republican for mayor in more than half a century.

The Northwest Indiana cities of East Chicago, Hammond, Crown Point and Portage will also hold mayoral primaries, and each city has council seats to fill. Crown Point voters will also vote on a referendum to increase property taxes to support public schools. If passed, taxes would increase by about $16 a month per $100 of a home’s accessed valuation.
