Race and Education: A Look at the Chicago Public Schools

Race continues to define the education that most children in this country, state, and city receive. Catalyst Chicago and the Union League Club of Chicago forum examines this challenge from both international and neighborhood perspectives.

Specifically, the speakers address these questions: How does race affect the quality of education provided by CPS? How does the success or failure of minority students in CPS affect the community at large? Which innovative strategies are improving the education of CPS students, and what can we learn from them?

Terry Mazany, president of The Chicago Community Trust and former interim CEO of the Chicago Public Schools, is the keynote speaker. Panelists include: Terrence Carter, from the Academy of Urban School Leadership and former principal of Barton Elementary; Ernesto Matias, Principal, Wells Community Academy High School; and Shelby Wyatt, a counselor at Kenwood Academy High School and founder of The Brotherhood peer mentoring program.
