Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky lashed out at her Republican colleague Joe Walsh today for accusing President Obama of lying about the debt ceiling.
Walsh released a video yesterday accusing the White House of using scare tactics in the debate about raising the national debt limit.
"Calling President Obama a liar about the default, when every single economist has said how devastating this would be – for Joe Walsh to say the nation’s markets won’t be affected - Is he kidding? Is he crazy? What is it?" said the Congresswoman.
She also argued that the Republicans are "irresponsible" for sticking with their plan to cut spending but not raise taxes, and said that, "To now hold that rather perfunctory and essential process hostage to their ideological crusade to cut essential government programs while not raising one penny of taxes for the wealthiest or for corporations, is utterly irresponsible."
Moody’s has already warned that they would degrade the standing of our bonds, and this is Armageddon, economically," she added.
President Obama says the country will default if Congress doesn't increase the debt limit by August 2nd.
As for reports that the President "walked out of" debt discussions, Schakowsky smacked down those allegations.
"The president ended the meeting, the meeting was over," she said.
A Walsh spokesman did not return a call for comment.
