Anti-government protests in Syria are nearing the two-month mark. After initially hinting at compromises, President Bashar al-Assad now appears to favor using force to crush the demonstrations. Last weekend saw an escalation of government forces in cities across Syria.
For awhile, it looked like Bahrain’s Sunni minority government might negotiate with the Shiite protesters camped out in the capital city Manama. That window of possibility closed after security forces fired on a crowd of demonstrators in March.
