Chicago drummer Mike Reed experienced what can be described as an unpleasant situation while touring in Europe in 2009. But from that event has sprung art in the form of fresh compositions, and a curiosity about how other creative people make something beautiful out of ugly or awkward episodes in their lives.
A retrospective featuring artist Archibald Motley Jr. is at the Chicago Cultural Center through the end of August. One highlight of the exhibit are his paintings of South Side nightclubs during the 1930s and 40s.
