Englewood is something of a mini-Detroit. Well into the second half of the 20th century, the area centered around 63rd and Halsted was dynamic and prosperous. But in more recent times, the community has struggled to overcome a host of urban problems.
Irving Park Road follows the general line of a local portage, which is the soggy land between two rivers. So when a park was planned for Irving Park and Central in 1912, it was called Portage Park. That’s also the name of the neighborhood around it, Community Area 15.
