Why, if NATO was built to contain Soviet aggression, does the military alliance continue to exist more than 20 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union? No one at the summit will pose that question — but demonstrators will.

The Chicago Police Department will be getting a hand from out-of-state officers during the upcoming NATO summit, which is expected to draw protesters to the city.

As officials batten down hatches for marches that could draw thousands of out-of-towners, some Chicagoans are clearing space, allowing tents in their yards, even opening spare bedrooms.

Before NATO and G-8 leaders meet in Chicago and Camp David, community groups, labor unions, anti-racism organizers, Occupy activists, environmentalists, faith leaders, immigrant rights and social justice advocates gathered for The People's Summit.

So, if a band of NATO summit attendees should wander out of the security zone, where would you send them to eat? 

Metra is putting strict security measures in place for this month's NATO summit, including barring its thousands of passengers from carrying food, liquids or backpacks. It will also close 26 stations due to staffing shortages.
