JONATHAN: Everyone knows music from Porgy and Bess ("Summertime," "I Got Plenty o' Nothin," "It Ain't Necessarily So") but almost no one can tell you the story of the show, and fewer still have seen it in performance.
1. Life as a Dream opened this weekend at Stage 773. It's billing itself as "one of the most revered plays of the Spanish Golden Age." Venus Jarris of the Chicago Stage Review says it also "demands a great deal from its audience. It demands that we pay attention to the details.
1. "The Brother/Sister Plays" at Steppenwolf. This trilogy was supposed to be the unveiling of a major new talent addressing the African-American experience, and instead it turned out to be a single excellent one-act flanked by one that was mediocre and another that was out-and-out poor.
