While defense gets cut, budget remains bigger than mid-1990s

President Obama went to the Pentagon today to announce a broad, new defense strategy that includes hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to the current military budget. The president said that despite the cuts, the U.S. would maintain its military "superiority."

President Obama has asked Congress for $671 billion for the Defense Department in fiscal 2012. The request includes $553 billion in core spending, including weapons procurement, and nearly $118 billion in military spending for Iraq and Afghanistan.
