The East St. Louis School District 189 board has obtained a restraining order barring the Illinois State Board of Education from taking over the district.In issuing the order Monday, St. Clair County Associate Judge Stephen Rice said it was unconstitutional to remove an elected board.
The East St. Louis school system says it will shutter five schools because of declining enrollment and in an effort to pare the district's roughly $12 million budget deficit.The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the schools will close by June 30.
