For years, Chicagoans could hear world-class musician Jon Weber just by stepping into the lounge at Chicago’s Four Seasons Hotel. Now, people all over the country will be able to hear Weber as he steps into Marion McPartland’s roll as host of the syndicated radio program Piano Jazz.
The 33rd Annual Chicago Jazz Festival began Thursday. Chicago remains home to a number of year-round jazz clubs but writer Tom Brenner remembered a time when downtown Chicago hopped to its own swingin’ rhythms.
This year, some unusual performers will appear in the lineup for the Chicago Jazz Festival: contestants from the Louder than a Bomb youth poetry competition will perform between musical sets over the weekend.
We may not think of it this way, but we hear in 3-D. Good thing, too. It’s how we know what direction to turn when we hear footsteps or where to look for our kid in a crowded playground. But this depth of field is almost impossible to capture on tape.
