“Sit back, relax, and let’s swing together.” With those words Larry Smith would open his nightly jazz show on WBEZ. Smith passed away last weekend. He had a long-standing and close relationship with WBEZ, spending more than 20 years at the station, but his passion was jazz.
Drummer and composer Mike Reed is a legend in the making. Reed’s a key member of our world-renowned improvisational music scene. He’s also the force behind a number of events in Chicago – the Umbrella Music Festival, the Downtown Sounds series, and Pitchfork.
Clarinetist-composer James Falzone is a man with wide ranging musical tastes. Last time he was on Eight Forty-Eight, he and his group KLANG were putting their spin on the music of Benny Goodman. Now, Falzone is working in a different musical direction.
