It's been about a week and a half since we last visited Whittier Dual Language Elementary School, and much has changed since then. Certainly, even more has changed since they took over the field house 34 days ago. Thirty four! Over a month.

Lisa has been sleeping at the Whittier Dual Language Elementary School field house for three weeks now, where the Chicago Public Schools yesterday had People’s Gas turned off the heat and hot water supply to the building.

Monica is a sweet young girl in a pink knit pancho. Her hair is tied back into a ponytail and she is shy. I’m making her speak in English for the interview. She’s comfortable in the language, clearly—but she’d be even more comfortable if we were speaking Spanish.
