Amid proposed budget cuts, poet celebrates libraries

Among the belt-tightening measures Mayor Rahm Emanuel has proposed to ease Chicago’s budget woes were $11 million worth of cuts to city libraries. The proposed cuts included reduced hours for all library branches and over 350 staff layoffs.His plan has not been well received.

Richard Fammerée died on Thursday, May 5, of Lou Gehrig’s disease. The poet, composer and singer founded UniVerse of Poetry. The group’s mission is universal dialogue, compassion and peace.On Sunday, May 15, members of UniVerse will gather at the Chicago Cultural Center to celebrate Fammerée.
