Artist Susana Baca singlehandedly put Afro-Peruvian music on the map in the mid-1990s. David Byrne gave Baca her first glimpse of international recognition, when he featured her interpretation of "Maria Lando" on the Soul of Black Peru, a compilation on the Luaka Bop label.
