On this date in 1889, social worker Jane Addams moved into the West Side slums — and began to change the world.

The Chicago neighborhood known as The Island is less than ten miles from downtown. But it's the kind of place you won't find, unless you're looking for it.

This past Tuesday, we ran a post on Chicago's Bridge to Nowhere — the former "L" bridge crossing the West Side Metra tracks near Paulina and Carroll. Since then, John Schmidt has come across another photo which gives a clearer picture of how the bridge was once linked to our transit system.

An iron bridge that crosses over the West Side Metra tracks a block west of Ashland Avenue is actually a remnant of the "L." 

 The text of the plaque at 2701 S. Damen Ave. describes the achievements of Father Jacques Marquette, the first European to reside in Chicago. But there’s one aspect of the plaque that always seems to catch the viewer’s eye: the swastikas.

Haymarket Square was located on Randolph Street just east of Halsted, about where the Kennedy now comes through. On this date in 1886, the site became infamous.
